Mr Jones Watches do more than just tell the time. We believe that now everyone carries a cellphone, the watch is liberated from it's purely functional role and can carry some new messages and behaviors.

Crispin Jones explains the development of Mr Jones Watches:

"I have an undergraduate degree in sculpture and later graduated from the Royal College of Art with a Masters in Computer Related Design (2000). After graduating I combined my fine art background with some of the skills and tools I'd learnt as an Interaction Designer. I worked on producing one-off pieces for exhibitions that sought to explore interesting aspects of our relationship and dependence on technology [this work is all archived at mr-jones.org].

I was initially drawn to the wristwatch as a great technological survivor. Very little technology that was developed hundred of years ago is still considered mainstream (and even less so with wearable technology which tends to have an extremely short shelf-life). In 2006 I produced a set of seven watches that sought to undermine the idea of the watch as a status symbol and also explored some alternative ways of displaying the time. These watches were shown in various exhibitions in Europe and Japan, but I was frustrated that they didn't reach a wider audience.

I decided to explore how easy or difficult it would be to manufacture a small batch of watches that I could retail. I began by emailing every watch factory I could find with a list of questions, when they replied I followed up with more questions. Pretty rapidly there was only one factory that was replying to my emails, who could produce to the quality I wanted and also did not have prohibitive minimum orders. For the first batch of watches I produced five designs, each available in an edition of 100 pieces.

The first series of watches was released in summer 2007, but the autumn of that year (and somewhat to my surprise) several of the limited edition designs had sold out. I thought that this would simply mean that people purchased the designs that remained in stock, however slightly to my dismay they kept asking about the sold-out models. I decided to reissue the most popular sold-out models, with a slightly modified design to differentiate them from the limited edition versions.

Reflecting on this it seemed that this was a sensible way to develop our range and it is the model we continue to follow: each year we release four or five designs as Limited Editions of 100 pieces. The models that sell most strongly we reissue as part of our permanent collection (always with a modification to the design to differentiate them from the original edition)."

"I wanted to make a watch that didn't tell too much time"

We have released dawn west dust east, designed with artist and poet Brian Catling. This enigmatic timepiece has a single 'eye' that reveals a colour on the dial below. The time is suggested rather than defined in a way that Catling says helps us to slow down time (or at least make its passing less shrill).

This watch is the final model to be released as part of our Masters of Time series and is available in a signed, numbered edition of 100 pieces.

We have recorded a short interview with Brian Catling talking about the design of the watch and also a time-lapse film recorded over 24 hours.

Series 4: bpm designed with Tom Middleton (December 2010)

We're delighted to announce the release of BPM. This design is the result of a collaboration with DJ Tom Middleton, the watch has an animation on the face that helps you calculate the beats-per-minute of any piece of music, essential information for any DJ (or aspiring DJ!)

“The nocturnal world of international DJing is all about keeping time: a top DJ should to be aware of the speed of each piece of music in his library. I thought it would be useful for DJ’s to have a simple graphic solution to calculating BPM’s built in to the watch itself".

"To calculate the bpm of a track: wait until the seconds hand aligns at 9, 12 and 3 on the watch (denoted by a full white circle) and start counting the quarter notes/beats as you’re listening to the music. It's much easier with House/Techno music as the bass drum usually falls on these quarter note beats.

You'll see the white circles gradually filling up with red and blue, stop counting when the white circle appears again. Multiply the count by four and you have the bpm.On the rear of the watch are some basic bpm ranges for a selection of current dance music genres".

Series 4: The Last Laugh, designed with William Andrew (November 2010)

	Today we are releasing The Last Laugh, a watch designed with comedian William Andrews. This watch forgoes the hour and minute hands, instead the time is displayed on a skull’s teeth. The eyes and the nose are mirrored and the overall impression is of a gleefully absurd memento mori - an object to remind us that life is brief.

	“Central to the way the design progressed was developing the theme of the on stage ‘death’ and the drive of performers to go to ever greater lengths to elicit laughs from a crowd. The skull references the ‘tears of a clown’ concept, the widely held belief that comedians are essentially quite sad in nature and the rather pointless desire that many stand-ups have to have last laugh.” William Andrews

Series 4: The Hour designed with Graeme Obree (November 2010)

	Mr Jones Watches has released The Hour, a watch designed in collaboration with record breaking cyclist Graeme Obree. The watch has a reflective, meditative tone - each hour is marked with a different word that reminds us to make the most of each hour as it passes.

	“I wanted to use words that would instill a sense of value that an hour is a unit of time to be or do or think or act in some way that makes us realise its passing. In a subtle way to instill a sense of mortality that is tempered by an idea of how to occupy this hour that will pass but once.” Graeme Obree

Series 4: Compass Road designed with Iain Sinclair

	We're proud to announce the release of Compass Road, a watch designed in collaboration with author Iain Sinclair. The names of eight writers and visionaries are positioned around the dial, each according to their geographic link with London. A pattern on the hour disk causes names to fade in and out of view as the time passes, a visual expression of Sinclair’s interest in the psychogeography of the city.

	“Think of your journey through mortality as a sequence of valid movies and the pain is ameliorated. Forget the tedious 60-minute division of the lecture hall or dead television (quartered by adverts): arrange just enough markers for the 90-minute slots of Golden Age cinema. Masters of time launch event - November 3rd 2010

We are delighted to invite you to the launch of our new collection: The Master of Time. For this limited edition series of watches we have collaborated with five extraordinary individuals to create five unique designs.

Mr Jones worked closely with each collaborator to create a watch that reflects their individuality while maintaining our company ethos. Each of the collaborators has an interesting link to time - from the athlete's struggle against the clock, to the DJs skill at judging the space between beats.

The collaborators are: Iain Sinclair (author); Graeme Obree (record breaking cyclist); William Andrews (comedian); Brian Catling (artist) and Tom Middleton (DJ).

Cyclops SE and Always on my mind

	This is a special edition version of our popular Cyclops model. This watch dispenses with a conventional arrangement of hour, minute and second hands; instead a single hour marker passes around the dial. Each hour is represented by a different circle, the black hoop eclipses and releases each circle in turn to indicate the time. Cyclops can be read with a relaxed kind of accuracy that offers a counterpoint to our hectic modern lives. This watch is different from all our previous editions: the Everyday Special is a set of 366 one-off pieces - a single, unique watch for each day of the year. The hour hand on each watch spells out a month and the minute hand a day, no two watches are the same. We all have a special date - for some it could be a birthday, for others an anniversary, or it could even be that day which changed the course of your life. 	On Foot displays the world record times for running different distances. Three arcs map the records to the hours, minutes and seconds on the watch. The outer arc shows records of less than 60 seconds: 100m, 200m and 400m; the sweep of the second hand corresponds with span of each record. The two inner arcs align with the minute and hour hand respectively, for records of under and over one hour, showing distances from 800 metres all the way up to 100km phew, sounds complicated! Design meets disability

Long-time friend of Mr Jones Watches, Graham Pullin has published an extraordinary book, Design Meets Disability. Pullin's book is a rallying cry for a greater involvement of designers in the process and creation of products for tackling disability. As part of the book Pullin initiates conversations with different designers who develop initial sketches around a certain theme or area. Crispin Jones was one of the designers and he developed some initial thoughts about how watches for the blind (tactile watches) could express different aesthetics aurally by mapping the visual language of different watches.

Chris Overend wins award for muse photograph!

Congratulations to Chris Overend who has won an award from Calumet Photography for the muse portrait he took of futurologist Ray Hammond who was the muse for "The Future"!

Chris was the winner of the Calumet Assistants Photo Contest 2009 a nationwide competition for young photographers. The 20 best works are on display at the Drummond Street branch in London.

PVD Special Edition models

"Loves Me" is based on effeuiller la marguerite (that's plucking the petals off a flower while receiting, "loves me, loves me not" to you and I). As the seconds tick round the display on the watch faces shows either "Loves Me" (yay!) or "Loves Me Not" (boo!)

To get an answer from the watch you whisper it the name of your beloved and then pull out the winding crown. Whatever the watch stops on - "Loves Me" or "Loves Me Not" is your answer. Of course if you don't get exactly the answer you were hoping for first time round then you can always opt for 'best-of-three'...

London Design Week 2008

Mr Jones Watches is moved to issue the following statement in response to reports of a gang of confidence tricksters using the firm’s name as part of an elaborate scam during London Design Week 2008.

“Characters of a suspicious nature have reportedly been offering what appear to be Mr Jones Watches to members of the public in the Newburgh Street area of London. Beware of anyone offering watches as reward in games such as the tickle-my-wrist, tick-me-tock-you and hand-me-your-time, you will certainly lose your money.

We suspect the involvement of our nemesis Mr Shiny-Bland Watch. In the past Mr Shiny-Bland has tried to trick people into believing that his dull, expensive watches are a superior product to our offerings. Mr Jones Watches, as all discerning individuals know, are superior in design, execution and function – put simply they do more than just tell the time.

We will continue to monitor the situation and would like to reassure members of the public that we intend to apprehend the gang as a matter of urgency. Once they’re in custody we’ll subject them to the full force of the law. Or at the very least give them a severe ticking-off.

Mr Jones Watches has collaborated with photographer Chris Overend to create a series of portraits of modern-day muses. The muses are people whose work thematically links them to the different models in the new series of Mr Jones Watches

The Average Day

The Average Day shows a breakdown of what average people do at different times on an average day. The data for this was gleaned from several sources including an EU survey of time use in 10 of the member countries. The muse for this watch is Professor Jonathan Gershuny who is the Director of the Centre for Time Use Research and who has a collection of 750,000 time-use diaries (which he suspects is the largest collection in the world).

Loves Me

Heather Heber-Percy is the Chairman of the Association for British Introduction Agencies and she estimates that during her 25-career of romantic pairing, she has brokered over half a million introductions. She is linked to "Loves Me" which is a watch for solving romantic dilemmas: as the seconds tick round the face shows either "Loves Me" or "Loves Me Not". Pulling out the winding crown stops the mechanism and gives you cupid’s verdict.

The Watcher

Gina Negus worked for the Metropolitan Police and is the founder and director of Alternative Solutions female led investigation agency. She is paired with "The Watcher" which features two faces on the front of the watch. The faces perform a choreographed micro-drama as the seconds tick round - each keeping the other under surveillance.

The Future

Ray Hammond is a Europe's most experienced and widely published Futurologist, he argues that we should all look to the future because, "it's the only part of your life you can change." The New Decider is paired with retired top-flight football referee David Elleray. In Mr Elleray's career he made a vast number of decisions - a career total of 246 red cards and 2064 yellow are testament to this. The New Decider is a watch that helps referee the wearer's life - as the seconds tick round the words “yes” and “no” are alternately displayed in the decision-window. Whenever a decision is called for the wearer can glance at their wrist for an answer!

Mr Jones Watches has released a pair of limited edition sterling silver brooches. The brooches have kinetic, animated displays, just like our watches (but without the clutter of the hour and minute hands!) The brooches are interactive objects - they can be used to answer questions, or resolve romantic dilemmas...

The brooches are designed by Crispin Jones and are hand crafted and hallmarked in England. They are each produced in a limited edition of 25 pieces and come in a wooden MJW presentation box with a signed limited-edition card.

The Resolver

The Resolver contains the essence of the Decider watches: The face of the brooch alternates the words "YES" and "NO" in a colourful optical pattern. This brooch is interactive - it can be used to make decisions: simply think of a question and then pull-up the winding crown to pause the mechanism, whatever the display is showing is your answer.

Loves Me

This brooch contains the essence of the Loves Me watch, the design is inspired by the game of effeuiller la marguerite in which “loves me, loves me not” is spoken while plucking the petals of a flower. The display on Loves Me rhythmically alternates the phrases "Loves Me" / "Loves Me Not".

Loves Me is also interactive - it can be used to answer a romantic dilemma: think of the object of your affections and then pull up the winding crown (this will temporarily pause the mechanism) whatever the display is showing is cupid's verdict.

Mr Jones Watches. Series 2 is released today - the new series consists of five designs, each produced as a signed, limited edition of 100 pieces.

The new series follows on from our very successful first series. The new watches take as their theme the social role of technology: we have faith in the tiny technological marvel known as the wristwatch to tell us about the passing of time, but it can do far more than that. Some of our watches help you make decisions, others remind you to live in the present, but all are playful and unusual; our watches do more than just tell the time.

The Average Day

This watch eschews the conventional division of a day into 24 hours, instead it divides into units of median daily routine. The dial shows a breakdown of what average people do on an average day, so you’re able to see what you yourself should - on average - be doing at any time. The outer loop on the dial represents the AM and the inner loop the PM.

Loves Me

The design of this watch is inspired by the game of effeuiller la marguerite in which “loves me, loves me not” is spoken while plucking the petals of a flower. Loves Me acts as a never-ending, animated flower that answers love dilemmas: pulling up the winding crown stops the mechanism and reveals cupid’s verdict.

The Watcher

Two characters on the watch enact a tiny choreographed play. They look all around, but never rest on the other’s gaze. The faces keep their tiny vigil on your wrist and are always ready to share a moment of micro-poetry whenever you look at your watch. The two faces each have a small magnifying dome over them to aid visibility.

The Future

The Future is now! This watch displays a carpe diem message along with the time. The hour and minute hand make up the words “the future”, whilst the face alternately displays “is” and “now”. This watch is a handy reminder to the wearer to live in the present.

Following the success of the first limited edition Mr Jones Watches, we are producing three of the designs as open editions. The open edition models are avaolable on an ongoing basis, they are not numbered and the dials are slightly different from the limited edition models.

Mr Jones Watches is participating in the V&A Fete with an exciting mechanical racing game (race around the clock!):

This is the game that we created for the fete - two people race bikes around the circle by winding the handle as fast as they can. Thanks to everyone who came along and made it such an enjoyable two days, click here to see the final winners and loser table.
